Understanding Vision and Beauty

What is reality? A camera sees the world fundamentally differently that we do as human beings. What you remember is not what you saw, and the concept of “beauty” is all in our heads. This talk unravels the differences between how a camera operates and how we perceive the world – the more differences we understand the better a photographer we become.

The Universe at Our Feet

Macro photography yields unending possibilities in your own backyard or kitchen table. However, macro photographers play by a different rulebook. Learning the rules and how to rede􀃶ne them is the cornerstone of this talk, and there are many things to consider that we’ve all overlooked. There are new technical challenges, and they are worth every effort when you overcome them. A demonstration will be given on some interesting setups that people can try at home to break out of any creative rut.

Capturing Invisible Light

Infrared and Ultraviolet. Hiding right in front of us, there is a fantasy world of surreal
landscapes and patterns on the smallest scale that are invisible to us. Exploring this
world of invisible light can be an adventure all on its own, and it’s easier to explore
than you might imagine. If you are firmly in the “I don’t know what I don’t know”
category, this will be an eye-opening discussion. If you have dabbled in these areas
before, you’ll learn just how far down the rabbit hole goes. As a live demonstration,
we will make flowers glow magically in ultraviolet light and learn how to recreate this
process.

The Life Of A Photographer

Making a living from photography is a huge challenge, but so is just making enough to buy new equipment to fund a hobby. You wouldn’t believe the numbers of hats needed to pay all the bills, and there are many misadventures along the way. What creative solutions can you apply to your own process to build an audience and make money? How far would you go and what risks would you take? With many anecdotes and examples, this final talk showcases the accomplishments and failures seen in the professional and amateur world of photography.

Don Komarechka

Don Komarechka is a nature, macro photographer who’s photographic adventures reveal a deeper understanding of how the universe works. Exploring the world that we cannot see with our own eyes has been a common thread in Don’s career as a professional photographer. Always science-minded but never formally trained, Don uses photography as a way to explore and understand the world around him. Photographing something unusual or unknown is the perfect excuse to learn something new. Don’s work often pushes up against the technical limitations of modern camera equipment and the physical limitations of light itself.
