Tundra Ecology Lab – Return Back South

After 6 incredible weeks of science and adventures of the midnight sun with Greg and the Tundra Ecology Lab, Jakob and I had to say goodbye and head back down south. Flying in the north really gives you a sense of just how massive Canada is – it took us 14 hours of flights to get from Alexandra Fiord and back to Vancouver.

Our time at Alexandra Fiord was incredible – full of exciting wildlife experiences, camaraderie and laughter, exhausting days in the field, cozy evenings at camp spent playing games and guitar, and absolutely stunning scenery.

We finished our time up north off with a bang and with the field season in full swing. After a slow start to the season, where we were basically just waiting for the snow to melt, things got busy when it finally did! All of a sudden, we were spending long days in the field collecting data, maintaining the longterm experiments, setting up new ones for current graduate students’ projects – all the while beginning to prepare for the end of the final field season. The other 5 crew members are still up there, working hard to accomplish everything they need to before they head south mid-August.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some more words and photos about the long-term research at Alexandra Fiord, why it’s so important, how it’s been possible for all these years, what it’s like to be shutting it down after over 4 decades, and of course, a little about the camera equipment that made our work possible. We appreciate you following along!

Amplis Foto is joining Greg and his research crew this summer to document it all – in the hopes that we can help tell a story that will educate and inspire viewers about the science, history, and importance of this remote and beautiful part of the world.
