On Location With the H&Y Magnetic Filter System

During my trip to Florida last April, I had a lot of fun working with the H&Y magnetic filter system. The use of filters in landscape photography is very handy, giving you the opportunity to reduce the difference in brightness between the sky and the rest of the landscape.

The H&Y filter system uses a magnetic frame that attaches securely to the filter mount of your lens.  As a universal filter mount for magnetic frame filters, this opens the door to a very wide array of H&Y and other filters.  I used the H&Y 1.2 and 0.9 gradient neutral density (GND) rectangular filter as well as the brand’s circular polarizing filter.

To create beautiful images at low speed I used a tripod with a ball head.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. This location is well worth a visit in the spring, especially for bird lovers. The area it is made up of strips of land jutting into the sea near Titusville.

This photo was taken at Falling Creek Falls north of Lake City, Florida. It is not easy to find small waterfalls in Florida, as there is very little elevated terrain. I wanted to show the beauty of this stream with its colourful waterfall and white foam that forms on the surface on the water.

For this image, I wanted to create another perspective of Falling Creek Falls, north of Lake City, Florida. I shot with the goal of showing the speed of the rapids.

This image shows the dock that protrudes into the Atlantic Ocean at Sebastian Inlet State Park in Florida. You always have to be careful with people who move during your long exposure photography. To avoid subject blurring, I had to take a series of images to capture one successful photo.

Everglades National Park in Florida is a place where the landscape extends as far as the eye can see with marshes that seem to be endless.  I wanted to show the beautiful clouds, so I used the circular polarizing filter to emphasize the contrast between the blue sky and the marsh vegetation.

Nikon Z9, 24-120mm to 27mm, f/7.1, 2 seconds at ISO 6400. H&Y S-GND 1.2 and ND64 CPL filter.

At Rainbow River State Park in Dunnellon, Florida, I thought I would find several waterfalls – alas, they were all dry this year because of the lack of rain, except for this small waterfall.

From the title I was expecting more detailed information about the magnetic filter system, not a series of photographs using different filters.
