Community Postcards

com·mu·ni·ty – What is a community?

Is it a just unified body of individuals, such as people with common interests living in a particular area? Is it a group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society or is it more?

We are exploring the facets of community and its meaning and importance through the focused lens of community artists and their work in the City of Toronto.

Our 2024 Artists were selected from previous show participation, including Karen Weiler, Alex Usquiano, Lawrence Bridges, Monica Gupta & Phil Sutherland.

The show prints are on 4 ft x 8 ft panels that are exhibited outdoors in the lively Stackt market complex. The show is free of charge to view. The hard work of WTPG volunteers has brought photographic art outdoors into public viewing spaces for the past decade to free photography from the tethered constraints of traditional indoor gallery spaces and bring creativity directly into community spaces.

I want to personally thank StreetARToronto (StART) and the City of Toronto for their ongoing support and guidance for these projects – their help has been instrumental in making these shows a reality. Our amazing supporters for this project are Stackt Market for hosting our show in their unique space, the fantastic staff and owners at Revprint Studio 205, Astrolab studio, Urban Imaging for the vibrant print work that brings our images to life and Elinchrom for their significant support of our community photo events and projects.

We hope to see everyone out and about taking in all the amazing photography at locations throughout the city during the Contact Photography Festival and we hope you can join us on May 30 from 6:30 pm-9 pm at Stackt Market for our meet-and-greet with the artists and a celebration of another great year of Contact Festival.

Phil Sutherland is prolific Artist, Photographer, Elinchrom Ambassador and Studio Owner. Phil is the Executive Director for the not-for-profit arts organization West Toronto Photography Group. He is born and raised in Toronto and is a proud member of the Indigenous Community.

His photography style focuses on telling stories through the creative use of light. His passion for the craft of lighting and visual storytelling has led him to passing on his knowledge to the next generation of photographers through his many workshops, mentorships, events and exhibits.

His contributions to the Toronto arts scene can be felt and literally seen all throughout the city, from cycle track barrier wraps to large-scale projections on buildings and his annual photo exhibit “On The Fence,” to name a few.

“Photography can be a catalyst for changes in communities, and a form of communication that flows across language barriers.” – Phil Sutherland
