Lighting History: Capturing a WWII Centenarian with the Elinchrom THREE

As a portrait photographer, I need gear I can trust—lights that perform anywhere, without compromise. That’s why the Elinchrom THREE and FIVE have become my go-to travel companions. They’re powerful, reliable and pack up just as easily as they set up. Paired with Elinchrom’s range of modifiers, they’re an easy “yes” in my kit.

One of the most meaningful portraits I’ve made recently was of WWII centenarian Jim Parks. At over 100 years old, Jim’s presence carries a weight of history you can feel just being in the room with him. I wanted the process to be as effortless and comfortable as possible, keeping the focus on him and his story—not on me fiddling with lights.

That’s where the Elinchrom THREE came in. With a 100cm Rotalux Softbox, I had everything set up in under five minutes in his nephew’s home. At full power, it gave me exactly the clean, expressive light I needed to capture Jim in a way that felt timeless and powerful. No complications, no second-guessing—just gear I could trust to honor the moment.
