This February (February 25–March 1, 2026), Elinchrom ambassador Trevor Godinho has been invited to Halifax to photograph Canadian veterans as part of the 35th anniversary commemoration of the Persian Gulf War. It’s a rare and deeply meaningful opportunity to document the lives and voices of those who served during a pivotal moment in Canada’s military history – stories that, far too often, remain underrepresented.
This work is part of his Honour Country Sacrifice Project, Trevor’s ongoing national portrait and oral-history project dedicated to active and retired members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The mission is ambitious and intentional: to capture 400 stories from coast to coast to coast, representing all gender identities, communities of colour, Indigenous Peoples and members of the LGBTQ2+ community. Every portrait is a reminder that service in uniform has never been one-dimensional.
This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion, an institution that has played a vital role in supporting veterans for a full century. Beyond remembrance, the Legion has long been a lifeline for veterans’ mental health, advocacy and peer connection – offering a place where shared experiences don’t need explaining. Legion membership is now open to everyone, whether you’ve served or not. Becoming a member is one of the most direct ways civilians can stand alongside veterans, support their wellbeing and help sustain the community spaces that make connection and healing possible.
The Halifax visit plays an important role in that mission. The Persian Gulf War marked a defining chapter for Canada’s modern military, yet many veterans from that era have never had the chance to formally share their experiences. This project helps ensure their sacrifices, resilience and humanity are preserved – not just for today, but for future generations.
To make this trip possible, Trevor is currently seeking corporate sponsorship and community support to help cover travel and production costs. Partner organizations will be acknowledged across national media, exhibitions and digital platforms, aligning with a project that has already reached more than 30 million Canadians. Past coverage includes outlets such as CBC News, CTV, Global News, CP24 and the Toronto Star. Visibility matters but impact matters more. Any support, whether corporate or individual, makes a real difference and is sincerely appreciated.
Donations can also be made directly through the Honour Country Sacrifice GoFundMe:

If your organization believes in legacy, storytelling and honouring those who served, please connect with Trevor to explore how you can work together. This is about more than a trip – it’s about ensuring these stories are seen, heard and remembered.
For service members and veterans in the Halifax area who wish to participate in this project, your story matters and you’re warmly invited to be part of it. If you served and would like to have your portrait taken and your experiences respectfully documented as part of Honour Country Sacrifice, please reach out to Trevor directly to express your interest or ask questions. Participation is handled with care, dignity and on your terms – it’s an opportunity to ensure your service is recognized and remembered as part of Canada’s shared history.
Thank you for taking the time to read and for any support you’re able to give. Every contribution helps keep history alive and trust me, history has earned its portrait.
