From butterflies and flowers to dance, motion and Art Deco glamour, WTPG’s Community Photo Summer Camp is going out with a spectacular finale.
It has been a summer filled with light, creativity, community and photography at Exhibition Place. We had some amazing gear from Elinchrom for the events helping to make the workshops magical.
The West Toronto Photography Group’s Community Photo Summer Camp series has brought photographers together throughout the summer to explore professional lighting, creative portraiture, movement, nature and the incredible spaces that make Exhibition Place such a unique photographic playground.
And now, as the summer series begins to wrap up, we’re finishing things in a very big way.
Our summer adventure has already taken us to Scading Cabin, where we created a dramatic lighting workshop surrounded by the historic character of the site and awesome Model Yvonne T. We then had an evening workshop with 12 photographers at the Bandshell stage for an energetic Dance & Motion workshop featuring the amazing model Julia W, exploring movement, timing and creative lighting in one of Exhibition Place’s most recognizable spaces .
But we’re not finished yet.
Flowers, Butterflies & Summer Light
As part of the final stretch of our summer programming, we’re returning to Scadding Cabin during the CNE for two special photography events focused on the beautiful gardens surrounding this historic building.
These sessions will give photographers an opportunity to slow things down and explore the incredible details of summer—flowers, butterflies, natural light and creative photography.
It’s a very different photographic experience from our studio lighting workshops, but that’s exactly what makes the summer series so much fun. We’re encouraging photographers to explore different subjects, different approaches and different ways of seeing the world around them.
And being there during the CNE adds another layer of energy and photographic possibilities to the day.
The Grand Finale of the Summer: Art Deco Fashion Shoot
Then comes the big finale.
On September 3, WTPG will bring the Community Photo Summer Camp series to one of Exhibition Place’s most spectacular historic buildings: the Automotive Building.
This extraordinary 1929 structure provides a breathtaking backdrop for our final event, combining Art Deco architecture, fashion, professional lighting and the energy of the CNE into one very special photography experience.
We’ll be bringing professional Elinchrom lighting, designer Adrianna Fulop will be creating a stunning look for our model, and photographers will have the opportunity to experiment with dramatic light, fashion and composition against the incrediblerom architectural details of the building.
Think Art Deco glamour meets contemporary fashion photography.
The Automotive Building becomes our studio—and the architecture becomes part of the photograph.
With only 12 photographers, the final workshop will remain intimate and hands-on, giving participants plenty of time to shoot, experiment and ask questions.
And, true to the spirit of our Community Photo Summer Camp, it’s Pay What You Can.

We are incredibly grateful to Exhibition Place, the York Pioneer and Historical Society and the Canadian National Exhibition for helping us bring these workshops to life and for allowing our photography community to experience and photograph in some of these remarkable spaces.
For us, the Summer Camp series has never simply been about teaching lighting techniques.
It’s about getting people together.
It’s about photographers meeting photographers, sharing ideas, trying something new, discovering how light works and—sometimes—simply spending a few hours making photographs with a group of people who love photography as much as they do.
We’ve photographed architecture. We’ve photographed people. We’ve photographed movement. We’ve chased butterflies. We’ve explored flowers. We’ve experimented with professional flash equipment and discovered new ways to use light. And we’ve had a lot of fun doing it.
