ILFORD – Preparing for Print

ILFORD has produced some short educational reels to help photographers better understand how to choose the right ILFORD paper based on the look, feel, and how their prints will be displayed.

This is the another short educational reel in our series. We share some practical tips and insights to help you prepare your files for print.

Here are the key points covered:

Monitor calibration & ICC profiles

Getting the monitor calibrated and using the right ICC profile helps ensure what people see on-screen is closer to the final print. Most monitors are set too bright, which is why prints often come out darker than expected.

Resolution

Resolution makes a big difference when printing.

Aspect ratio

Camera aspect ratios don’t always match common print sizes. This is why cropping is often required to avoid losing important parts of the image.

File Adjustments

Basic tweaks—brightness, contrast, and sharpening—help optimise the file for print. Prints reflect light differently to screens, so subtle adjustments can have a noticeable impact.
