Lighting Workshop at Historic Scadding Cabin

Last month, I had the amazing opportunity to host a very special photography lighting workshop inside the Scadding Cabin at Exhibition Place. It was a real honour to lead the very first lighting workshop ever held in this historic space. The West Toronto Photography Group is trying to find new and unique locations in the city of Toronto to hold community based photography lighting workshops.

A huge thank you goes to The York Pioneer and Historical Society (YPHS) for welcoming us into their beautiful cabin. YPHS is Ontario’s oldest historical society and also the second oldest historical society in Canada. They operate the Scadding Cabin, Toronto’s oldest surviving building. Built in 1794 for John Scadding, this log cabin is an irreplaceable piece of the city’s history.

Our goal for the evening was to create dramatic, cinema-inspired lighting that highlighted not only our model but also the cabin’s historic artifacts, textures, and unique atmosphere. Using a pair of Elinchrom ELC HD PRO 1000s, a 9” reflector, a large rectangular modifier, and even a smoke machine, we transformed the space into something magical. The results were incredible. I really felt the emotive and articulate lighting and when reviewing the pictures feel the presence of the cabin in very image. Special thanks to Lilli F for modelling in a period-inspired outfit provided by YPHS, and to all the talented photographers who joined us. Your creativity and energy made the evening unforgettable!
