First test with the new Nikon Z7II

Great Grey Owl by Michelle Valberg Z 7II

Like more and more photographers globally, I am hooked on mirrorless.  Some might say, I may be a little obsessed (in a good way). For the past 2 1/2 years, I have been using both the Nikon Z6 and Z7 exclusively.  I sold my D5 and D850 – so you know if you are a Nikon user – I am FULLY committed.

Majestic Great Grey Owl

I honestly think mirrorless has made me a better photographer.  After participating in the official launch of the new Nikon Z 6II last fall, which I loved, I was anxious to try the Z 7II as well.  So last week when my Z 7II package arrived, within mere hours and a whole lot of excitement, I was back out in the field in search of wildlife to photograph.  Standing in a beautiful winter wonderland forest, I was gifted an opportunity to photograph this majestic creature.

Watching this great grey owl on the hunt, flying with grace and precision through the trees, was very impressive. When she hooted on a tree limb close by, I was emotional in recognition of this amazing gift (and I may have shed a tear or two).  I was using the 500mmPF with FTZ adapter.  In the forest with low light and using a fast shutter speed (in hopes I would capture the owl in flight), I needed a higher ISO setting. I was astounded by the image quality. The clarity and dynamic range are extraordinary.

The new auto-focus modes are quick and responsive.  The lightweight body, dual card slots, long lasting battery power, picture controls, 5-stop in-camera stabilization, video capabilities and EVF are just a few of the other key features that make this camera unbeatable. Both the Z 6II and Z 7II are powerful tools.  This is the future of photography.
