PHOTONews Challenge Winter 2011/2012

Jason Drury captured this winter sunrise on the Alaska Highway in Northern British Columbia, just south of Watson Lake, Yukon, using a Pentax K-x with a 10-20 mm F3.5 lens, shooting at 1/25 second and f/13 at ISO 400.

Jason Drury, originally of Whitehorse, YT, is a graduate of the University of British Columbia, Okanagan, in Kelowna, B.C. with a degree in Human Geography. Influenced by his studies in Human Geography, Jason is interested in the way we talk about and represent landscape, and the ways in which landscapes of production once valued for their natural resources have become landscapes of consumption, valued for their aesthetic qualities. Jason captured this winter sunrise on the Alaska Highway in Northern British Columbia, just south of Watson Lake, Yukon, using a Pentax K-x with a 10-20 mm F3.5 lens, shooting at 1/25 second and f/13 at ISO 400. The resulting RAW file was edited with Photoshop Lightroom and Nik Software Color Efex Pro. The PHOTONews Challenge for Winter 2011/2012 is to celebrate the beauty of the winter season.

The topic is open to a range of interpretations – you may shoot landscapes, winter activities, or seasonal events, and images from past winters are welcome. If you fly south to escape the snow, your perspective on the “winter wonderland” theme may be quite a bit warmer.

Take a look at the Winter Challenge thread at the flickr® group for additional samples, suggestions, and technique tips.

Please note that shooting in cold weather requires freshly charged batteries – and shooting toward the sun may result in underexposure – turn the camera slightly to meter the scene without the sun in the frame, use the exposure lock feature on your camera, then recompose the image and take the picture.

To participate in the PHOTONews Challenge, please visit our flickr® group at www. flickr.com/groups/photonewsgallery/ and click on the discussion thread titled “PHOTONews Winter 2011 Challenge”. Post a 600 pixel wide version of your entry in this thread – please include your name, your location, a description of how you took the photograph, and why you feel it is a special image. Full instructions on how to join the flickr® group, and how to post photos, can be found at the flickr® site.

The photo pool at our flickr® group will also be used to select images for our Reader’s Gallery – so take a look, sign in, post a few of your favourite photos, and enjoy our interactive photographic adventures!
